Ban on using dimethyl fumarate
Regulation (EU) No 412/2012 of 15 May 2012 replaced the temporary decision of the Commission of the European Communities of 17 March 2009 (2009/251/EC). Articles or parts thereof with a dimethylfumarate (DMF) concentration greater than 0.1 mg/kg may not be used or placed on the market.
DMF (CAS no. 624-49-7), which is used as a biocide to combat mold infestation, can cause serious allergic reactions on contact, even in very low concentrations.
Within the EU, the use of DMF for the manufacture of consumer goods was banned by the biocide guideline 98/8/EC and it should therefore not be contained in any products that have been made in Europe.
However, DMF could still be in goods imported from outside the EU. It is usually packed in small bags (similar to the ones used for silica gel, which is approved), but can also be applied directly to the product. A product is regarded as containing DMF either if a bag with DMF is enclosed or if the limit value of 0.1 mg/kg is exceeded in the product itself.
Products containing DMF must not be supplied to PFERD.
